THE ART OF COMFORT FOOD

A Much-needed Antidote to Winter's Chill

Painting food for me is a way to celebrate the beauty of the everyday, transforming humble domestic themes into playful works of art. It’s okay to embrace indulgence and warmth in the darkest days before the arrival of spring.

So, as well as fresh seasonal ingredients I’m also inspired to paint those nostalgic, hearty British dishes that bring warmth to the soul. Puddings with custard, crumbles, pies, and my favourite toad in the hole with a dollop of English mustard, all the traditional comfort food favourites! It’s like a little hug for the heart, and I want to share that feeling through my work. For me, January isn’t about diets or resolutions, but rather about celebrating the joy and cosiness of these foods that help us get through the cold months. And to go alongside mine’s a Guinness, an Old Speckled Hen or ‘half a pots’, ‘Flowerpots’ ale being one of our local Hampshire breweries.

Here are a couple of my paintings that reflect my love of all things comfort food, depicted of course with a typical ‘Jenny fun-filled story approach!

The rich textures are built up using brown paper and newspaper collage. I’ve used ink in tones of black and sepia along with white acrylic gesso which come together to give each piece a bit of texture and contrast. I like to create an intimate, layered quality that draws the viewer in.

Within each painting there’s a little added narrative, inviting you to pause, smile, and reflect on your own memories of comfort food. So, I’m not just capturing food; I’m celebrating the simple pleasure of indulging in something comforting, reminding myself and others that winter is made a little brighter with a bit of nostalgia and a lot of flavour.

My Comfort Menu !

  • Toad in the hole with onion gravy and a dollop of English mustard, half a Pots ale to wash it down or a pre-dinner pint of Guinness in the pub!
